More insulation is not always better

Did you know that more is not always better when it comes to insulation?Insulation batts and rolls (fiberglass, mineralwool, etc) are specifically designed for specific spaces. For example, typical fiberglass insulation designed for a 2×6 wall is R-19, while that same insulation designed for a 2×4 wall is R-13. While the higher R-value may look tempting, it would be a big mistake to use that R-19 insulation in a 2×4 wall. Why? Insulation is most effective when it has as many tiny air pockets as possible. If you stuff an R-19 batt that is designed for a 2×6 wall into a 2×4 wall, it will be compressed and actually provide LESS insulating value than the appropriately sized R-13 batt. Whether doing some insulating yourself or having someone do it for you as part of a larger project, it’s important to make sure you know what’s going in your walls before they get covered up! Just because a wall LOOKS insulated, doesn’t mean it really IS insulated.
